Founded in 2008 in Savannah, GA, Deep Center helps young people connect their learning to their lives and their lives to their communities. Addressing the detrimental effects of poverty on literacy and healthy development, Deep challenges young people to engage with language and their stories through writing, reading, and performance. The Block by Block program and Youth Leadership Team serve high-school aged African American and Latino boys and young men, who participate in a 10-month session of out-of-school workshops, community events, and cultural celebrations. Deep uses a writing-based, participatory action and research curriculum, focused on engaging youth in community research and planning.
Under the Empowerment Projects initiative, Deep Center’s Block by Block program will use storytelling and civic engagement to help young men of color thrive in Savannah, GA.
