Dehumanization is traumatizing. Emotional dehumanization is shown in thoughts, feelings, and actions that limit expressions of empathy toward communities of color with both historical and contemporary implications. This webcast will explore the historical and contemporary contexts for the ways in which racialized trauma overlaps with the toxic stress of extreme poverty, housing instability, or substance abuse in the home. While these atrocities loom, BYMOC have insufficient access to mental health services and, when offered, the services often use Western ideological approaches that are incongruent with the culture and lived experiences of people of color. Presenters will explore culturally relevant solutions to eliminate racialized trauma and toxic stress.
